Fitrite hits the West Country

The West of England now has exclusive access to the revolutionary Fitrite decking and fencing portfolio from Sash UK through West Country Caravans, which has been appointed sole distributor of the range for the area.

Owner of West Country Caravans, Gary Rix, made the shrewd business decision to stock and distribute the Fitrite range with a view to longer-term plans for his company. “The current climate is encouraging businesses to diversify and expand into other areas, and this is exactly what we are doing,” he explains. The company is the leading supplier and distributor of ABI and BK Bluebird holiday homes throughout the South West of England and has been established in the caravan holiday homes business for over 40 years. In addition to this core business, Gary also saw a niche market for the supply of decking and fencing to other businesses in the area, in particular, farms, schools and pubs.

“The Fitrite concept has been extremely well received by our customers so far,” Gary continues. “The key factor is that it is extremely low maintenance. This is perfect for the farming community who can erect the fencing without worrying about damage or deterioration from the elements, as well as for schools whose specification requirements call for products that will stand firm over long periods of time, reducing expensive maintenance programmes.”

The Fitrite range offers resilience and versatility and being completely wood free, it will not rot. Environmentally, it boasts exemplary credentials – it is 100% recyclable and contains no toxic chemicals. It is also extremely strong, with the fencing posts and rails using galvanised high-strength steel internal supports, providing the ability to withstand not only impact but the West Country coastal environment.

The Fitrite range is now available from the company’s base in Exeter and Gary is confident that the Fitrite concept will be a welcome addition to his product range, offering the highest quality, lowest maintenance and most environmentally friendly fencing and decking currently available on the market.

Sash paving the way for sustainability in Scotland

After holding its first successful Window Energy Rating seminar, in conjunction with Pilkington energiKare™ at its headquarters based in Grimethorpe, Sash UK recently crossed the Scottish boarder to further spread awareness about how it works with its customers to increase energy efficiency and sustainability, providing them with the perfect partnership scheme.

The initial seminar was directed to bettering existing portfolios, being eligible for the Energy Saving Trust recommended scheme and reducing the cost of going through the WER process as a sole trader. Although the second seminar featured this, it also looked heavily into how Sash customers can attain green credentials and improve their current recycling systems. Over 42 installers came to the event, including customers from the New Build and Timberkit sectors to hear what Sash and Pilkington had to say.

Commenting on the event, joint managing director of Sash UK, Dave Ruzicka said: “Consumers of today are searching for window based home improvement products that have the green stamp of approval…they want to know that the products they buy will first and foremost save them money by retaining heat in their homes and better protecting them against the elements. Those companies that can prove this are one step ahead of the game when it comes to increasing sales, and we are working with our customers to ensure they have the best possible footing in the market to do this successfully. Working alongside Pilkington, our existing and new customers can tap into our extensive resources allowing them to take their businesses to the next level of operation. Of course you can’t just talk about the subject of sustainability and ignore other areas of benefit. This seminar looked into how are customers, by working with us, can help decrease their environmental impact on our industry.”

Keen supporters of the recently launched PVC aware campaign, Sash took time to introduce its customers to the scheme and to get them very much involved. Specifically looking at how sustainable its PVCu products are, the significant energy saving properties they possess and options on how to recycle their waste.

“We believe it is important to educate our customers about the environmental credentials PVCu holds and how it can be easily recycled to create brand new windows that share the same energy saving properties as their virgin counterparts. Those companies joining us will be aiding us to really raise the profile of our industry, and show how we are working together to maximize sustainable operations for the future. This will also help us to educate consumers as to why PVC should remain the material of choice,” concludes Dave.

More and more PVC window fabricators are registered as supplying C or above rated energy efficient windows and while glass remains the most important single factor in window energy efficiency, PVC remains far more thermally efficient than alternative materials.

Sash is planning to conduct more seminars in the near future so watch this space.

5-Star Rating with Sash

“Customer care is all important in today’s marketplace and Sash offers one of the most comprehensive services through its unique Window Energy Rating package!” This was the verdict from Richard Manser, whose company, 5-Star windows and Conservatories of Kidderminster, Worcestershire recently signed a prestigious deal to stock and distribute the extensive Sash product range.

The decision to move to Sash was due to the commitment that Sash offers to its customers and this includes a recent partnership with Pilkington energiKare™ which has resulted in the introduction of a powerful new scheme to raise the level of energy ratings in the company’s range. Under the partnership, Sash is now producing windows that attain to A, B and C ratings under the BRE Window Energy Rating Scheme. What this means to the customer is that they not only have guaranteed energy saving quality products, but they also have access to a comprehensive marketing package supporting the competitively priced range, and the backing of Pilkington, one of the most reputable names in the glass industry.

As one of the first companies to sign up to this innovative scheme, 5-Star is looking forward to reaping the benefits, which also includes eligibility to the Energy Saving Recommended Scheme. This significantly eases the cost and effort of attaining WER as a sole trader and it is this care towards the customer’s needs that raises Sash above the rest, as Richard explains.

“Having a range of products that sport a WER of C and above is the perfect way to gain customer confidence, as well as meeting the demands of offering greener products,” he concludes. “We made the right move over to Sash and the decision is already paying off, with full access to this excellent new partnership scheme.”

5 Star Luxury with Sash

Styles that vary, standards that don’t! The slogan of 5-Star Windows and Conservatories sums up the company’s corporate policy and signing a deal with Sash UK to supply and distribute Sash’s comprehensive range of doors, windows and conservatories is testament to these values! The deal also includes the innovative Sash Fitrite range of decking and components, a series that is increasingly attracting interest.

“We only supply quality, and Sash ticked all the right boxes for our requirements,” states Richard Manser, Managing Director of 5-Star. “We swapped from our existing profile supplier simply because Sash offers a vastly superior range for less cost … this equates to value for money for both ourselves and our customers.”

In today’s climate, customers are far more discerning about their requirements and one of the major current issues concerns the environment. “Sash’s environmental credentials are exemplary,” continues Richard. “As a company, we gain consumer confidence by offering greener products and the proven commitment of Sash to reduce the carbon footprint throughout the manufacturing process is a big bonus.”

5-Star operates from two sites in Kidderminster, Worcestershire with a 7,500 sq ft storage and distribution unit and a purpose built showroom, which will fitted out with the extensive range of Sash products. “In the six years that we have been established, we have earned a reputation as one of Worcestershire’s leading direct trade supplier, because we go one step further than our competitors and provide our customers with the very best in the marketplace,” concludes Richard. “Being associated with the Sash brand is a major benefit for our customers, who can be confident that the quality, support and longevity of the product range is superior to anything else!”

Result for Sash at Football Club

There’s been new developments at the Bamber Bridge Football Club over the summer, ready for the new season to start. Resplendent in the club’s distinctive colour scheme of black and white, Fitrite fencing from Sash UK is making a welcome debut.

The fencing has been installed around the pitch at Irongate, home to Bamber Bridge. For suppliers and installers, Lakeland Verandahs, the location couldn’t have been more prominent, particularly considering it was the first Fitrite installation job for the company, a family run business with more than 40 years experience of supplying and installing maintenance free home improvement products.

“We felt the economic climate and timing was right to enter the fencing and decking market, and the contract with Bamber Bridge proves that it was the right move,” comments Russell Milburn, former player at the club and now Managing Director of Lakeland Verandahs. “We took the decision to work exclusively with the Fitrite range simply because of its superior quality and for its broad potential in terms of colour.”

Colour was a deciding factor in the specification of the Fitrite at Bamber Bridge. The club’s chairman, Terry Gammons chose the fencing to match the club’s familiar black and white strip, with white handrails and spindles contrasting with the black posts. Aesthetically, the result is stunning but the value of the fencing offers much more. “Fitrite fencing significantly outperforms other fencing materials with its strength,” continues Russell. “Twenty-two men kicking a ball against the spindles on a weekly basis would cause damage to any other material but the Fitrite stands up to the challenge as the formulation of the fencing posts and rails uses galvanised steel and high-strength PVCu internal supports.”

In addition there is no need to worry about maintenance, a distinct bonus for overworked groundsmen. Because it is wood free, it does not rot or peel or flake, so there will never be any need for repainting or touching up. It is also 100% recyclable and contains no toxic chemicals.

“We are delighted with the result and so is the Bamber Bridge Football Club,” concludes Russell. “The product allows the club to comply with the latest regulations stipulating separation between stand and pitch with an aesthetically stunning yet practical solution, all down to the Fitrite fencing!”

Sash Packed Out For Partnership

With Window Energy Ratings (WER) becoming more prevalent within the industry and consumer awareness heightened to now becoming more energy efficient, Sash UK and Pilkington energiKare™ have joined forces to bring the company’s loyal customer base up to speed with the latest developments in this growth arena, and how they can fulfil consumer demand for value-added products.

By partnering with Pilkington energiKare™, Sash is now producing energy rated windows for both its VEKA and Spectus range attaining A, B and C ratings. The two companies coming together means that the customers of Sash, choosing to become a partner, have access to a range of window products that will help them differentiate their portfolio from their competitors, aid sales, become more consumer focused, not to mention being eligible for the Energy Saving Recommended scheme and reducing the cost of going through the WER process as a sole trader.

The demand for Window Energy Rated windows is subject to exponential growth that has been steadily rising since 2005, shooting up in the last year since its inclusion in the England and Wales building regulations (part L) 2006. This means that there is a need to elevate those companies that offer E rated windows further up the scale into band C, instantly opening up installers to a whole world of benefits.

“Using Pilkington energiKare™ to complete our insulated glass units means that we have products that meet all of the current market needs. Working in joint venture with such a company enables our customers, who are eligible for partnership, to have the endorsement of Pilkington and the Energy Saving Trust, are able to use the Pilkington brand with homeowners to leverage sales, offer a product that exceeds regulatory requirements - Part L, J, F and L Eire and satisfy the homeowners’ growing demand for ‘green’ products,” commented joint managing director of Sash UK Dave Ruzicka.

“By offering our customers a Pilkington energiKare™ partnership, simply means we are providing a comprehensive marketing package that supports our unbeatable products at a competitive price, positioning our customers perfectly with the consumer and more importantly their perceptions. The seminar has been a complete success seeing many of our customers taking an unprecedented interest in the WER scheme, seriously focusing their attentions on building an arsenal of better products to take their businesses forward!” concluded Dave.

“I am delighted to have been a part of the day’s proceeding and to be working alongside Sash to hone more window companies’ attentions to sourcing better energy products for their businesses,” said Andy McDowell, National Business Development Manager of Pilkington. “We know that our glass is the best in the market and by joining forces with such a longstanding player within the industry as Sash, our partnership means that we can invite progressive businesses to better their portfolios and optimise their sales. By joining our partnership scheme means that they have access to a wealth of marketing tools that will boost their operations.”

Existing and potential customers attending the seminar had their expectations raised and the impetus redefined when it comes to the grey area of WER and what they can expect from the future. This just adds another important string to the proverbial Sash bow and continues the company’s commitment to unrivalled customer service.

What people said:

"Customer care is all important in today’s market place, and having a range of products that sport WER of C and above is the perfect way to gain consumer confidence as well as meeting the demands of offering greener products. Today opened my eyes and I am definitely interested in pursuing this further!"
Richard Manser of 5 Star Windows and Conservatories.

"I came down from Scotland with a limited knowledge on WER, so did not know what to expect…I have to say that I am impressed with the partnership scheme and think it is something worth looking into further. I am always impressed by Sash and the initiatives they undertake to better customer relations and services."
Steve Porter of Porter’s Porches and Conservatories

"We were so impressed with what we heard today we believe this scheme is extremely beneficial to all who get on board!"
Paul Reid of Esk Glazing

"I am really interested in this initiative…I can certainly see the benefit of offering C rated windows as standard and doing this through Sash is cost effective and hassle free. We are going to grab this opportunity and make it work!"
Peter Bean of UPVC Care & Repair.

Top Deck to Business Success

In this age of diversification one product in particular that has exploded in the UK market over recent years is the PVCu deck that has been hailed as a major breakthrough in landscaping and garden design. A phenomenon that swept the United States some years ago has truly landed on UK soil with a bang and has been instantly picked up the discerning Great British consumer base.

Considered to be a high-end luxury home improvement product, the PVCu version has taken a dominant stance in the market place and is seen to deliver more beneficial properties than its wooden counterpart. One company that is certainly reaping the rewards, and indeed is responsible for introducing a PVCu version into the market to offer diversification, is Fitrite. Dave Ruzicka of Fitrite talks to Conservatory Magazine candidly about how decking and fencing has benefited installers nationwide.

“Fitrite has been bombarded with installers wanting to come on board and start selling our decking and fencing products. This goes to show that there is a demand out there and that our products are superior in terms of quality, aesthetics and of course price, making our decks the ideal diversification product for installers to extend their existing portfolios.

“Looking at the existing wooden products that commandeered the market for so long, Fitrite products instantly carry far more benefits. The up-keep on wooden decks is a continual job and in terms of delivering longevity they are extremely poor and subject to weathering. In fact weathering is the biggest factor that consumers have to face when buying a wooden deck and if not maintained will degrade over time and could be rendered unsafe due to rot. Not much of an investment when you look at it like that!

“From the research we undertook in the States, it was clear to see that PVCu decking and fencing was a thriving and vibrant industry that needed to be tapped into. Since then the advances we have made in replicating wood effects for PVCu products has been incredible and from this we knew introducing a PVCu version would be possible. So close is the replication that you would have to physically touch it to know, and even then many still have to ask…the aesthetical similarities are incredibly close.

“With consumers turning to low maintenance home and garden improvement products more and more the up-take on the Fitrite range has been unimaginable, seeing our decking and fencing being installed all over the UK in properties ranging from the park homes, right up to opulent private homes. The applications are endless and in recent years the commercial market has used the Firite range to extend their businesses in order to increase consumer traffic, seeing a spate of restaurants, hotels, garden centres and corporate offices kitting out their premises.

“More and more households are looking to extend their home improvements out into the garden, or outside available space, and for the window installer of today diversification is imperative to ensure survival in such a volatile market. We want window installers to continually replenish their order books with work and to fully supply them with the arsenal they need…and Fitrite installers are truly bringing in the business. Now the range has got bigger seeing the introduction of tinted glass balustrades, an increased choice of colours and in-built lighting to enabling the installer to give the consumer the chance to purchase a bespoke appendage to their home. This even extends out to gazebos!

"The Fitrite range is continually tested to ensure the strength and durability is not compromised and that our products set the standards for the industry to follow. This is further exampled through the development of our galvanised steel sub-frame structure that can withstand the elements, will never rust and gives the structure the firm support it needs. This also means that the structure will never warp unlike wood, giving our product that added safety aspect…especially for families with children, giving them that piece of mind that will never be out of mind for those opting for wood."

"I think its fair to say that the products speak for themselves and with it being so versatile it can be applied anywhere creating some truly exceptional spaces. Many of our installers have found the addition of Fitrite to their portfolios extremely beneficial…and let’s face it who wouldn't…they can turn even the dullest of environments into something extremely appealing." Concludes Dave.

Decking Out Holiday Homes

It’s easy to install, it looks fantastic and it’s maintenance free … these are just some of the benefits offered by Fitrite decking from Sash UK, which has been installed at the Golf Links Holiday Home park at Portrush in Northern Ireland. The summer holidays may seem a long way away but this caravan park is gearing up for the tourist season by installing Fitrite throughout! A prestigious and long-term arrangement has been agreed between MPB Decking of Northern Ireland and the owner of one of the major players in holiday homes in the region, for the supply and fit installation of Fitrite decking.

Portrush was the testing ground for the Fitrite product and the client was so impressed with both the product and service from MPB Decking, that this was deemed to be the winning combination for decking installation throughout the holiday park. Fitrite offers myriad advantages over conventional wooden decking, including freedom from maintenance, resistance to rot and deterioration and environmental responsibility. The PVC decking is 100% recyclable and contains no toxic chemicals. It has a unique modular design, making it easy to install and maintain and because of its formation, it has an inherent strength that will withstand even the most enthusiastic holidaymaker!

“To date we have completed a full range of decking options to the Golf Links holiday park in a range of colours matching each individual holiday home including a flagship black balustrade with glass to a more prestigious standard,” says Adrian McPeake of MPB. “The client has chosen a high specification product for his decking to the park that enhances the aesthetic appearance of the park and will keep its appearance over time. And for MPB Decking, being such a key player in the holiday home sector, becoming the main installer for other parks equates to a long term commitment for us!”

Deal Sealed on Orkney

A decade of working together has seen a strong bond forged between Sash UK and Orkney Builders, reinforced by the latter recently signing an exclusivity deal with the UK’s leading manufacturer and installer of PVCu doors, windows and conservatories.

Class, quality and service were key to the two year agreement, that sees Sash supplying over 60 windows a week to the island builders, fortifying the confidence that both have in each other’s abilities. “Orkney Builders is a prestige installer on the Orkney Islands and this deal aligns our policy to only partner with prestige companies,” comments Dave Ruzicka, Joint Managing Director at Sash. “Through ten years of experience, Orkney Builders knows that our product performance, quality and service are exemplary! One of the most important factors in the success of our working relationship is the ability of our extensive product range to combat and protect against the notorious Scottish climate – we build to last and the proof is all over the islands for all to see!”

As the island’s main building contractor, Orkney Builders handle a diverse range of projects from large-scale industrial to commercial and residential through to individual house builds. “Sash is our exclusive choice for PVCu doors and windows,” comments Stephen Kemp of the company. “Service, product and support are always excellent, but perhaps the most important issue is that of consistency. Our location on the island dictates that our receipt of supplies has to be precise – once a week we collect our orders from Sash and if one unit is missing, then the timescale means that we have to wait another week before it can be collected. Sash always ensures that our order is ready for collection, on time and to the exact specification. This is a trust that we have built up over the years and it works! This assists us in meeting deadlines and maintaining the highest possible standards of service for all of our customers on the island. We enjoy an excellent working relationship with Sash despite our remote location,” concludes Stephen. “The company takes a personal interest in our business and this care and attention is the reason why we have partnered with Sash for so long and we will continue to do so!”

Another Industry First for Sash

Having earned an unbeatable reputation in the UK as the No.1 manufacturer of conservatories, doors and windows, Sash UK’s status has managed to extend its reach across the Atlantic seeing the company secure a $1.8m contract to supply a two-storey conservatory as part of its joint venture with VEKA - Blue Diamond Conservatories - believed to be the largest conservatory deal ever made in the UK to date!

When a Pittsburg-based residential care home wanted to extend its premises to accommodate a swimming pool enclosure, scouring the US market to find a company to replicate the traditional, quintessential elegance and grandeur often associated with UK conservatories proved extremely unrewarding…that is until they found Blue Diamond. With Sash UK’s expertise in design & construction and VEKA’s versatile profile system, Blue Diamond was deemed the perfect choice as a company that could deliver exactly what they were looking for.

“We pride ourselves on producing inspirational structures and it seems that our reputation for greatness is reaching global proportions, seeing us out classing our transatlantic counterparts,” comments Sash UK’s joint Managing Director Dave Ruzicka. “Securing a deal of this size and nature is fantastic news for Sash. This high profile showcase job is one that will certainly cause a stir in the industry and quite rightly so! We won it because we are the best at what we do. The challenge for us now is to find out if any other company has secured a bigger deal…but it is doubtful.”
The 38m long x 18m wide conservatory has to be painstakingly pre-built on the shop floor, with the components assembled to ensure that this premium construction meets all design requirements. Once done, then the structure will be shipped to America to be erected, with installation scheduled for October 2007.

Once complete, the conservatory will stand as a permanent testament to the ability of Sash to supply and manufacture portal structures to the largest possible dimensions. “We have the capacity and we have the capability,” continues Dave. “This project is not simply a case of supplying components – it requires an expert degree of design engineering and meticulous planning to ensure complete success. The client recognised that we were more than capable of completing this mammoth task and once the structure is erected, we will be justifiably heralded as the company that made a record breaking deal to supply the largest conservatory ever sold in the UK!”

Sash and Paddy, Paddy and Sash!

He might spend a lot of time on the road, and there’s not much call for new doors and windows in a battered old motorhome, but actor and comedian Patrick McGuinness has taken a break from his alter ego, Paddy (from Max and Paddy's Road to Nowhere), to renovate a house in Bolton. And he is relying upon Sash UK to help him!

The detached property is in dire need of repair and restoration and part of the project included installing new windows and doors. Sash was recommended by Paddy's interior designer and he decided to see for himself just what the company had to offer. Two visits to Sash's factory later, and he made his decision, choosing Sash's Vertical sliders and patio doors. In addition, Sash provided a bespoke solution in the form of a large arched window to fit into one side of the house to bring in more light and provide a visually appealing feature.

But it didn't end with fenestration. The company's Fitrite range of fencing also caught his eye and as he was looking for something strong and maintenance free to protect his dog from falling over the ravine at the end of the garden, the Fitrite fencing proved ideal!

Quality and aesthetic appeal were at the forefront of the specification of the Sash products and Patrick is delighted with the results. "Although the house won't be complete until later this year, the installation of the Sash doors and windows have already made a massive impact on the visual appearance of the house," comments Dave Ruzicka, Managing Director at Sash. "We are delighted that Patrick recognised the value of our doors, windows and fencing product ranges as well as our ability to create tailor made solutions. As his character in Road to Nowhere would say, 'dink dank do, job well done!'"

Sash Accommodates University

Bright, clean and fabulous! That's the verdict on the new 'the mix' bar facilities on the university park campus at Nottingham University. Students are now dining in style, courtesy of Sash UK, who recently installed two luminatrium portal conservatories. The structures were commissioned as part of a development to create 'the mix' bars that serve coffees and soft drinks alongside alcoholic drinks and food to all students and staff at the University.

The decision to install Sash's luminatriums was based on two main criteria. Firstly, the catering department realised that revenue was being lost from the existing restaurant facilities by a large proportion of the student body choosing to eat elsewhere. Secondly, there was a need to revamp the overall look and feel of the catering facilities to attract the students back. Sash delivered the perfect solution, with an attractive alternative that is literally jam packed every day!

"The returns on this investment have been incredible, seeing us beating the competition hands down," comments Kirstie Danzey of the University. "Sash has well and truly created an environment that has injected the 'wow' factor back into our university. The erection of the conservatories has meant that the facilities can be used during the lunch hour as well as in the evening. One of the main reasons for the specification of these structures was that they had to accommodate the shape and size of the existing facilities and, with the flexibility and adaptability of the portal construction, this was easily achieved. The result is a light and airy environment where diners can relax and enjoy the whole dining experience, with open views to the outside." Additionally, the value of the luminatriums showed in the overall cost as they were significantly more cost effective to erect than a traditional extension.

This cost efficiency is also revealing itself to the caterers, Nottingham Hospitality. Not only do the luminatriums look good, they are also bringing in diners by the droves. The students themselves have responded extremely positively to their new eating venue. In a recent survey undertaken by the university, there was overwhelming support for the increased space and choice provided by 'the mix' bars. Previously, students were leaving the campus and going into town but 'the mix' bars have meant that hungry and thirsty students now have all the refreshments they need on one site. In Willoughby Hall, the largest outlet, an average 362 students and staff a day now relish the ambient surroundings that the conservatory has to offer. "The return on investment is already evident," continues Kirstie. "This, coupled with the fact that the environment, allows diners to relax and eat in comfort. By erecting the Sash conservatories, we have not only expanded the existing catering facilities but we have created a very aesthetically comforting environment where the students can meet, socialise and enjoy a meal and a drink at all times of the day."

"Installing these two structures made sense in terms of the space available and the timescale for the work to be carried out," she concludes. "We needed minimum disruption and Sash provided the ideal solution with their luminatriums, which were assembled in the factory then transported to site for fast and easy installation…they have paid for themselves already!"

Speed of erection, ambient surrounding and a noticeable increase in revenue make the Sash luminatrium conservatories on the campus an economic and efficient investment all round.

From The Shop Floor To The Top Draw

The Sash of today is exceedingly different to the company that was started over 40 years ago. From the humble beginnings of running operations out of a shed to an international organisation that turns over £26m annually, Sash has defined itself as the market leader in the UK and has played a pinnacle role in shaping the industry as we know it today.

But as the company has evolved, one thing seemingly remains the same and that is the ethos of Sash's dedicated workforce who are committed to delivering the best quality and services in the business. The family culture that crafted the business over four decades ago is still as strong as ever, despite the business growing to gargantuan proportions.

One part of the business that has seen its fair share of change throughout the years has been the shop floor, the heart of the business. "The shop floor is one of the most instrumental parts of the business that has to be in a position to diversify in order to cater for industry demand…and to achieve this, we consistently employ the best workforce in the business," comments Dave Ruzicka, Sash UK's managing director. "Our shop floor staff have had to take on board a lot of changes over recent years - diversification into specific areas of new business and embracing new technologies for our nearly fully automated factory, the first of its kind in the UK. Our rigid policy is to employ devoted, committed people, and consequently, long service within our company is extremely high."

Working on the shop floor has enabled employees to learn the basic skills of the trade that has given them the knowledge and aptitude to excel up the Sash ladder should they so wish. For all shop floor employees, it is not just about turning out large quantities of frames or structures on a daily basis, it is about seeing the bigger picture and understanding how their work links in to all departments throughout the company. Current Operations Director, Glenn Trevelyan, typifies just how successful the system is. "I joined the company 20 years ago as a shop floor operative and was able to quickly understand how the business operated and just how crucial my role was within it. So when it came to taking my career to the next level, I was in the best position to identify the area of the business I could best excel in."

Sash heavily believes in internal promotion and ongoing staff development, enabling its workforce to craft their own positions within the business. "For those people that feel that they want to progress within the business, Sash gets behind them 100% to ensure they get all the help they need," continues Glenn. "When I made the decision to work my way up, the backing I received was fantastic. If I did not have the invaluable knowledge I picked up by working on the shop floor, I feel that it would have taken me a lot longer to achieve my goal."

Sash's shop floor operations have become the most sophisticated in the industry. With Sash now diversifying out into new markets of opportunity, and not to mention its overseas links, this is one area of the business that has had to adapt quickly to accommodate change, turning out literally thousands of products on a weekly basis.

"We are the best because we produce the best, and this is because we only employ the best!" Comments Dave Ruzicka. "When we are looking to branch out in to other areas of business and win new work, we have to show our prospective customers what it is that makes us different from our competitors. Not only can we turn around large amounts of frames daily, we deliver the very best quality all the way down the line. Our shop floor operatives are our craftsmen and our engineers. Our products are made to last and this is something that is never compromised!"

Sash strongly believes in rewarding its staff where praise is indeed deserved. For those shop floor employees that hit their targets there is the reward of paid leave, and if they regularly hit the number of frames required a cash bonus is paid. But incentivising the staff is not the only reason Sash has a wealth of longstanding employees.

Mick Tighe, a shop floor operative, has been with the company since the miners strike back in 1997, and he comments: "Being part of the Sash team is what makes this job worthwhile. I have supervised the shop floor for many years now and I have seen an overwhelming amount of change over the years…changes that have made me operate more efficiently. We now have an array of machines that make it even more possible to achieve our targets, as well as turning out a better class of product at a faster rate. Things have really moved on! Our whole working environment just keeps getting better and better!"

It is obvious Sash is one company that will never stay the same and will always be first in line to embrace new technologies to make its international operations run smoothly. But one thing is clear, Sash's dedicated workforce is the true secret behind its success.

Sash Conservatories On The Rise

Despite the unpredictable market conditions and recent downturn in consumer spending, Sash is one company that has consistently made terrific gains across the board seeing its sales increase in all areas of the business. One area in particular that has done exceptionally well is its conservatory business, seeing its sales increase by 25% in the last month with this anticipated to rise over the coming months.

It would seem that fabricators are more confident now about the overall prospects for the conservatory market than at the start of the year, and it is expected that the conservatory market is set to grow in the back end of 2007, compared to this time last year. With Sash's conservatory prices remaining consistent throughout the industry doldrums and kept as low as possible when the consumer spending started to level out, Sash’s price stability has won fabricators' confidence through and through.

"Of course economy dictates, but as a company that diversifies its operations to counteract such market depressions, we can afford to keep our prices extremely competitive without compromising quality," comments Dave Ruzicka, Sash's managing director. "With more and more homeowners now looking to increase their property value in what is perceived to be a buoyant market place for selling homes, conservatories are seemingly becoming the cheapest way to add value. So not only do we deliver the very best products in the market place, but also deliver them at the best price... it is obvious that our sales are rising and will continue to do so."

One company that is commandeering the market, in particular new build, is Sash customer Cristal Clear. Offering a complete turnkey service, Cristal Clear has capitalised this market niche as the company’s managing director, Christine Jones, explains: "Many companies out there in the marketplace are not looking at the bigger picture. We offer a full service, overseeing the full installation package from design concepts to fabrication, installation, electrics and handover. The majority of companies in the main tend to subcontract out, leaving the other trades to reap the rewards. Of course this boils down to getting first-rate suppliers on board... and Sash are certainly that! We can rely on Sash to deliver the goods time after time, regardless of how unique the specification. Also the speed in which they are turned around is exceptional. Our confidence is completely assured and we can concentrate on delivering a flawless service. Business is really booming for us."

The Lean, Green, Fabrication Machine

Good Housekeeping For Sash UK

As a company that is at the top of its game, Sash UK prides itself on producing the very best products in the business to the highest specification possible. But with a workload that is constantly increasing, Sash has put strict measures in place to ensure that its carbon emissions decreases seeing it achieve maximum reductions across the board, resulting in them being commended by an independent energy efficiency body for its working ethics.

As consumers become more aware of the importance of sustainability, energy efficiency and waste reduction, the need for fabricators to become leaner in their manufacturing practices is paramount... but this is just the tip of the ice berg when it comes to energy saving and something that Sash has been working long and hard to ensure it gets right.

"We have been looking at all areas of the business to see where we can reduce Sash UK's energy requirements and wastage to make our company more sustainable, but this does not just apply to the shop floor," comments joint managing director Dave Ruzica. "Educating the staff has been the greatest part of our achievements. If it can be recycled then that is what we guarantee happens to it. Whether it is plastic profile, aluminium or cardboard from the factory floor, to waste paper from the office environment we have established reciprocals to collect it and work closely with various external agencies to get it recycled."

But it doesn't stop there! All non-essential machines that are not in use must be turned off, or if required to be on are adjusted accordingly to run at more energy efficient speeds; factory, office and outside lighting must only be turned on when required, out of necessity or operate on a timer; hot water systems are turned off by timers and off fully at weekends…the list is endless.

"Our mission is to reduce energy output where possible…if it can be switched off then it must be switched off when not in use…if it can reused, then it is reused. It really isn’t rocket science! We have made simple measures and adjustments to our working practices accordingly and it has truly saved us a fortune since being implemented just over a year ago. The beauty of such a scheme is that it does not effect our production output in the slightest, but ensures that we are all working towards saving our precious energy reserves and putting something back through extensive recycling of all our waste. Of course we have just scratched the surface of what we can do to make our business as sustainable as possible," concludes Dave.

Sash believes that energy efficient working practices is something that is easy enough to start, but maintaining is another challenge all together. To ensure that this level of success continues, Sash has an Energy Review Board that meets on a regular basis to monitor its current status and develop appropriate initiatives…something on which they can build for the future.

Director of the Month

Since becoming joint Managing Director, David Ruzicka's day has totally changed and as Sash evolves, so too does his typical day: "Operating an open door policy, it is impossible to anticipate daily events but like most, I'm in the office for about 8:30. I go through the numerous emails that seem to increase in volume each day. Then it's onwards with meetings with Sales, Marketing and Production. By late afternoon I'm looking at the financials, evaluating campaigns and planning future ones. As Sash's international presence grows these strategy meetings tend to be conducted via telephone, in particular with the vice president of our joint venture in the US. I regularly travel to the likes of Cyprus, Australia and America to meet with our partners there. When in the UK, I'm generally home by 5:30. After more worldwide communications I finish off the day at about 8:30 with dinner and a bottle of wine with my wife, Ruth."

1.My first job was as a fully qualified bespoke tailor.
2.I joined Sash UK in 1985.
3.My most useful gadget is Sat Nav without a doubt.
4.My favourite music is Cher.
5.There are 3 business people I admire, Richard Branson and Sash's co-founders Ron and Terry, for all that they have achieved.
6.My last holiday, which incidentally was my honeymoon, was to Australia and Dubai.
7.My interests are Formula 1, fine wine and of course my family.

Sash UK operates from purpose-built premises that benefit from state-of-the-art machinery and technologies: "This is something that we often take for granted. But I am always reminded by how blown away our visitors are by our facilities, that Sash HQ really has the 'Wow factor'."
Sash moved to the Park Springs site in Grimethorpe in 2000 and has since lead the way with the regeneration of this developing industrial area. "We are proud of the positive impact our presence has had on the local community, particularly since the pit closures of in the mid-80's."

2006 was financially the toughest in seven years for Sash, owing largely to a period of intense investment in research and development, resulting in growth in several areas of the business. But all the hard work looks set to pay off as forecasts for the next 12 months show potential for a stunning year and David can't wait to be firing on all fronts: "'07 promises to be the best Sash has experienced in over 40 years," he says.

The business climate continues to get tougher every year and there tends to be a 'Golden Age' mentality among the industry and that the best is in the past with future prospects limited. But David views this in a positive light: "The tougher conditions have driven us to become fitter, leaner and more professional in our operations. But for those companies who haven't looked for the opportunity in adversity, the worst may still be yet to come".

Sash has realised that diversification is the key to success. But to introduce new divisions and products in any company, let alone the cultural change required in many respects, can take its toll. Sash has fared well in this respect, despite some early misgivings that change could affect the core business: "Results from a recent customer survey has confirmed that 95% of our customers grade us good to excellent, testament of the standards we continue to meet in our trade division."

"We value the feedback from our customers and always aim to be responsive to their comments and requests," says David. "With the impending smoking ban we have been asked about smoking canopies. As a result, Sash has found a niche in the smoking shelter market that, due to our Fitrite venture, we are ideally placed to take advantage of. We are currently investing in research and development and have various offerings for this market place, including a new design expected in June."

In 2006, Sash took the controversial decision to take on a second profile in order to enter new markets, in particular new build. "Sash has built itself upon strong supplier relationships and after recent developments they have never been better. With the installation of new machinery complete, our new line is now fully operational and doing well. The resulting product line has attracted new customers and we are currently negotiating national deals with key developers in both a supply only and supply-and-fit capacity," explains David.

The most notable event in recent Sash history would have to be its Fitrite decking and fencing venture, for which Sash secured unique sole rights in the UK and Europe. It has certainly been the biggest financial investment in recent years. But the rewards are starting to be reaped by both company and customer. With sales figures up on last year by 250% and an expanding network of approved installers the future looks bright for Fitrite.

David's message to the industry, particularly those manufacturing up to 250 units per week, is clear: "Stop fabricating, buy from Sash and join the revolution". He accepts that each company runs its business as they see fit, but with recent initiatives to improve factory efficiencies, Sash has been able to freeze its prices, offering cost savings to the smaller manufacturer. The question really, feels David is: "How can anyone manufacturing on that scale afford to and still make reasonable margins?"

David has a pragmatic approach to business: "I try not to listen to so-called 'gurus' with no hands-on experience, who base their predictions on numbers. The key is to be close to the market. Don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone!" Sash has big plans for the next 5 years and David wants the rest to follow. "Our aim is that Sash will take the lead in becoming the ultimate super fabricator."

In addition to ambitious goals in the UK, Sash has also made significant inroads into overseas markets, notably in the U.S. with luminatrium. Luminatrium is the aptly re-named product and service that is giving – quite literally - 'Blue Sky Thinking' to businesses and installers alike, allowing them to achieve what they previously thought to be impossible.

Essentially a luminatrium, taken from the Latin for light (lumi) and courtyard (atrium), is any glass structure requiring the added support of an aluminium frame, from small structures, such as conservatories, right up to multi-storey structures able to span full size swimming pools and beyond. Sash has already installed many extraordinary and highly celebrated buildings, for large private homes and others for restaurants, hotels and prestigious business premises, all over the world.

"Sash has divisions in the USA and Australia and also exports throughout Europe. Through our joint venture, Blue Diamond, and New Jersey dealer, Garden State, we have been exporting luminatriums into America, to states such as Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, New Jersey and Toronto to name but a few," explains David, "Given the barriers of distance and time, the road to success has not been an easy one. But 10 years of diligent hard work has finally begun to pay off, signified by a luminatrium order that is the largest in Sash history and possibly the industry, at a size of 6,000 ft² and value of $1.6 million." We understand that larger still are under negotiation.

From its humble beginnings back in 1945 when Ron and Terry set up their 2 man band of Bean and Morrell, Sash has come a long way and continues to set its sights high. Never one to shy away from a challenge, David is confident that by working with fellow MD Stephen Morrell, the board of Directors and their dedicated workforce, they will continue to keep Sash at the top of their game. When speaking of his long-term love affair with Sash UK, it is hard to see where the man ends and the company begins. "There isn't anywhere I'd rather work. Cut me open and I bleed Sash". And do you know what? He probably does.

Sash UK Steps Into The VS Arena

Sash UK Ltd, founded more than 40 years ago and consistently one of Britain's most successful trade manufacturers of windows, doors and conservatories, has now laid down the gauntlet by entering the burgeoning Vertical Slider market with the Sash VS, promising market leading quality, superior performance and highly competitive prices.

Such frames in any material have traditionally been expensive with the vagaries of service often offered by small, specialist manufacturers. Sash UK has removed the ups and downs of buying VS windows by offering a window that enjoys the latest design and production technologies, to provide an affordable solution for period and new properties. Order to delivery turnaround is just 10 days, with national deliveries.

The Sash VS ticks all the boxes by providing authentic period-styled vertical sliding windows but with the performance expected – and demanded by the Building Regulations – of modern frames. Sash VS windows provide the benefits of modern glazing technology whilst retaining the charm and appearance of a past era. Manufactured using the latest extrusion technology and fittings the windows will retain their pristine performance for years with the minimum of maintenance.

The sophisticated operating mechanism offers high security locking whilst both panes may easily be tilted for ease of cleaning. An Ovolo design is used on the outer frame, cill, sash, bead and stop with surface mounted 'Astragal' Georgian bars and sash horns also available to provide an authentic appearance.

Sash UK Ltd Joint Managing Director David Ruzicka says that the Sash VS is the right product, at the right time: "There has been a number of specialist companies offering VS products but few that offer a comprehensive range of other products, manufactured to approved standards. Sash UK has a huge customer base and, therefore, a streamlined distribution service. The VS gets the Sash UK treatment of on-time, in-full at competitive prices. Our quality and service offer will be superb."

Natural Born Winners

Sash reigns supreme at this year's Glassex Conservatory Design Competition.

When it comes to designing, engineering and constructing awe-inspiring luminatrium structures that truly capture the imagination, Sash UK has certainly earned its reputation for being a world leader in this field. As a company that is committed to continually pushing the technical boundaries and being at the forefront of innovation, Sash is set up to deliver an array of breathtaking structures time after time, each one acting as unique testament to its craft… and it is for these precise reasons that Sash took centre stage at this Year's Glassex Conservatory Design Competition to claim its award as the Supreme Winner for 2007.

Entering into just two categories, Portal and Innovative Design, Sash's submission pieces well and truly wowed the judging panel seeing it storm both groups hands down taking home two Gold, one Silver and one Bronze... as well as the desirable accolade of Supreme Winner!

For the Innovative Design category, Sash entered its spectacular VEKA HQ structure that typifies the size, style and complete commercial versatility its luminatrium range offers. Constructed over 14 days, this gargantuan luminatrium showcased just how a mundane business environment can be totally transformed into a light, spacious business facility that does nothing less than amaze every visitor that comes through its doors – for which they received Gold. Its second entry in this category highlighted Sash's creativity and ingenuity when it comes to fulfilling a brief... for this they entered a luminatrium structure that was built into the existing design of a private home to serve as a fully working art studio, offering 360 degree views of the surrounding countryside – this entry scooped up second place and the Silver award.

In the Portal category, Sash continued its winning streak by entering two projects that the judges deemed illustrated its untouchable adaptability to fulfil both the commercial and private sectors perfectly. First up to meet the critical gaze of the illustrious judging panel was the Diplomat Hotel. Charged with a brief to create a light and airy structure to house a new restaurant and associated reception area for a privately owned Hotel, Sash not only designed, supplied and installed the luminatrium, but also created a striking application that transfers and extends the property’s dynamics, providing an eye catching alternative to traditional build – a Bronze award was given for this project. The second project submitted in this category was the Lake Ontario Project luminatrium that highlighted the construction of a swimming pool enclosure at a private residence situated near Lake Ontario, North America. Tasked with designing and constructing this 2,120 sq ft large span luminatrium, Sash created a tranquil haven for the occupants of the property to enjoy the enchanting views of this world renowned natural wonder, that sits just 30ft from the property, all year round. In fact, this project impressed the judges so much that Sash won two awards for its outstanding craftsmanship... Gold and Supreme Winner, making the clear winners overall.

Commenting on the awards, Sash UK's Joint Managing Director Dave Ruzicka said: "I am delighted with the results of this year’s Glassex Conservatory Design Competition. Not many companies can enter in four awards and win an award for each entry, not to mention picking up the Supreme Winners title too... but I have to say that this comes as no surprise. Every project we undertake has its own unique complexities and challenges to overcome, but we at Sash take these elements and build on them to continually better our products and services across the board. We are a business that is committed to our industry 100%, investing our time and money in the right areas to ensure that our luminatriums are well received worldwide. Of course these awards don't just underline the achievements of Sash, but more importantly the people that make our business work. I would like to take this opportunity to commend all those involved on these award-winning projects... these awards are for you!"

Sash Offers Proprietors an Elegant Smoking Shelter Solution that won’t get confused with a Bus Shelter

As the smoking ban approaches, most establishments will have already begun the onerous task of finding a solution, which provides outdoor shelter for clientele wishing to smoke, without detracting from the aesthetic appeal of their premises. The range of gazebo's from Sash UK offers a unique alternative to the typical 'bus shelter' design, creating an attractive appendage to any property.

More importantly, a Sash Gazebo is safe, durable and low-maintenance. It will not rust, rot or splinter and just an occasional wipe will retain its pristine condition throughout the seasons. By design, it is both quick and easy to install meaning any disruption is kept to an absolute minimum.

"Despite the long anticipated smoking ban being a welcomed development for many, we appreciate that many businesses will be concerned about the effect it may have on trade, from smokers opting to stay at home, to others put off by the unsightly gathering of smokers crowding the entrance of the building," said David Ruzicka, Joint MD at Sash. "Our gazebo's were originally developed to enhance garden design but we have found that they also fill a niche in the smoking shelter market, particularly where customers are looking for something just that extra bit special. Why not kill two birds with one stone and create new appeal for your grounds at the same time as making provision for the needs of your valued customers," he added.

For example, at a list price from just £2996 for a 10ft single-tiered roof gazebo, the return on investment period is negligible, given its positive impact on trade. "For the proprietor who understands that a successful business is all about selling an experience, the gazebo delivers differentiation and a unique selling point, at the same time suggesting class and sophistication. The fact that it also overcomes problems posed by the smoking ban is almost just another bonus," finished David.

Super Palma Nova on the Beach

It may not have the exotic location like its namesake, but the Palma Nova hotel in Newquay would not be out of place in Mallorca! Having undergone a complete continental style makeover, the former hotel has been converted into 23 luxury apartments and PVCu windows and doors from leading manufacturer, Sash UK Ltd has significantly contributed to the aesthetic appearance of the development.

"This was a particularly prestigious project," comments Brian Sprake from window installers, Devoran Windows of Truro. "The properties are very individual and have been designed in a continental style, with white walls, timber detailing and large expanses of fenestration playing a prominent role in the design. The location of the complex is ideal, close to the Gannell Estuary and the world-renowned Fistral surfing beach. We chose Sash profiles for both the windows and doors for their durability, particularly in a coastal environment, and for their appearance which perfectly complements the crisp sharpness of the development."

In all, Sash supplied 127 top hung casement windows with centre false transoms, 31 French doors as well as 13 French doors with angled fixed windows on either side. Additionally, the company supplied three fixed windows with curved heads in a tongue and groove finish and two angled fixed windows with mullions.

Sash UK uses only the highest quality components in the manufacture of its profiles, and uses the VEKA Matrix profile within the units. "Our customers demand the best and as a founder member of the Network VEKA scheme, and a long term user of VEKA products, then that is what we deliver," comments David Ruzicka of Sash. "Devoran Windows required definitive bespoke windows and doors for this high status project and we were more than qualified to provide the ideal fenestration solutions."

Sash Doors Open Up in Cornwall

Falmouth is fast becoming one of Cornwall's most fashionable towns with the county's third largest tourist attraction, the National Maritime Museum Cornwall, drawing in a record number of visitors since opening. Devoran Windows of Truro was quick to capitalise upon the growing housing demand in the seaside town and a prestigious development involving the regeneration of a former hotel into 28 luxury apartments, saw the company installing a range of French and single doors supplied by leading window profile manufacturer, Sash UK Ltd. Melvill Court was completed four years ago and Devoran Windows was contracted to supply the doors and windows. "We chose Sash UK for quality, reliability and long lasting durability," comments Brian Sprake of Devoran. "The decision to use the PVCu profiles was based on a number of key criteria, including the superiority of the material and the company's standard use of austenitic fixings to withstand the salty climate due to the complex's proximity to the sea. Also, the profiles met the aesthetic requirements, to enhance the appearance of the apartment complex." Sash UK supplied 38 French doors and 20 single doors for Devoran to install. The single doors were commissioned for the Juliet style balconies incorporated into the design, with the French doors opening onto individual patios to allow maximum daylight penetration. Sash UK was one of the first British companies to adopt PVCu windows and doors as its core product and its partnership with leading PVCu profile manufacturer VEKA has seen the firm achieve a reputation for excellence and quality. "All VEKA profiles are extruded to BS7413 for quality and resilience and with this pedigree, they were the obvious choice for the high profile complex," continues Brian. "Melvill Court represents the growing demand in Cornwall for top quality residential construction that incorporates highly durable components for long lasting performance and appearance."

Sash Windows Dual Action

Performance, quality and service were the key criteria for Sash UK Ltd in a recent refurbishment in Herne Bay, Kent. Sash was heavily involved in the seafront refurbishment as part of a Partnering Agreement with Places for People Housing Trust. Sash not only supplied its PVCu Maco Tricot Tilt before Turn window system manufactured from VEKA's Matrix 70mm profiles, but also took on the role of main contractor.

The partial refurbishment of the high-rise tower block included re-roofing, concrete repairs, external painting, new communal entrance door, entrance system and intercom system bird netting. Sash was responsible also for the redesign and replacement of the existing windows and the option to use the Maco Tricot profiles was based on successful 1000 hours salt spray testing to cope with the environmental conditions.

The profile has a unique dual opening action. In tilt position, the window provides excellent ventilation by letting warm air flow out through the top and cool air feed back through the sides. In the turn position, the window opens a full 90 degrees inwards, enabling fast ventilation and simplifying cleaning. With a reputation as one of the most versatile systems on the market, VEKA's Matrix system is used to create virtually any style or design of windows and doors in any kind of building. For security purposes, the locking mechanism is Secured by Design approved and has a corrosion resistant surface coating for longevity.

"As main contractors on the job, one of our major considerations was tenant satisfaction," comments Brian Oxley, Commercial Director at Sash. "Throughout the programme, the residents were consulted at every stage and informed of what was happening, in order to create the minimum amount of disruption to their daily life. At a meeting held on 25th April, the residents awarded the project a very impressive KPI rating of 98.9%, confirming that the work was carried out to the highest levels of satisfaction for all concerned."

The Herne Bay project is one of many undertaken across the country by Sash over a period of many years. The Partnering agreement with Places for People encompasses the entire supply chain to ensure both quality and excellence of service and support for the client.
